From Stalemate to Statement: STAC Men's Hoops Pulls Away for 96–74 Victory Over Roberts Wesleyan

Sparkill, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Basketball team used a 59-point second stanza to turn a halftime stalemate into a 96-74 victory over Roberts Wesleyan University on Friday evening at Aquinas Hall Gymnasium.

STAC improves to 13-10 overall and 9-2 in ECC action with their six straight win, while Roberts Wesleyan falls to 3-14 and 1-8.

Starrell Hearns led the way for the Spartans with a team-high 19 points, as teammates Jordan Green (16 points), Brennan Chatman (13 points), Anthony Daley (12 points) and Igor Gonzalez (10 points) also scored in double-digits. Meanwhile, Collin Woods paced the visiting Redhawks with a game-high 20 points.

STAC shot 47.5 percent (38-80) from the field, while Roberts Wesleyan shot 46.7 percent (28-60) from the floor.

STAC NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Eleven Spartans logged double-digit minutes in the contest. 
  • Derrick James led the maroon and gold with seven assists on the night.
  • Starrell Hearns hit 8 of his 20 field goal attempts. Meanwhile, Jordan Green went 7-for-8 from the floor.
  • STAC out-rebounded Roberts Wesleyan by a 46-32 count, with Igor Gonzalez grabbing a game-high eight boards for the Spartans.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas swiped 11 steals, with the Redhawks turning the ball over on 20 separate occasions.
  • The Spartans earned advantages in five team statistical categories over Roberts Wesleyan: Points off Turnovers (27-8), Second Chance Points (22-10), Points in the Paint (54-40), Fastbreak Points (29-11) and Bench Points (39-13).

  • STAC's largest lead of the game came with just over 30 seconds to play in the second half of Friday's contest, when the Spartans led by 22 points, 96-74, on a William Landram II free throw.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas and Roberts Wesleyan were deadlocked at 37-37 going into the halftime locker room, with the maroon and gold shooting 35.1 percent (13-37) from the field and 33.3 percent (4-12) from the three-point line and 77.8 (7-9) from the charity stripe.
  • Starrell Hearns led all scorers with 10 first half points for the Spartans, while shooting 33.3 percent (4-of-12) from the floor and 40.0 percent (2-of-5) from beyond the arc.
  • STAC's best shooting half came in the second stanza, with the maroon and gold hitting 25 of its 43 total shots for a 58.1 field goal percentage and 4 of its 10 three pointers for a 40.0 percent clip.

ROBERTS WESLEYAN NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Nine Redhawks logged double-digit minutes in the contest. 
  • Collin Woods led Roberts Wesleyan with 20 points, while Jordan Brown (17 points) and Keonjay Carter (13 points) also scored in double figures.
  • Woods also led Roberts Wesleyan with five assists on the evening.
  • Collin Woods went 6-for-13 from the floor and 7-of-8 from the foul line. Meanwhile, Jordan Brown went 6-for-15 from the field, 3-of-8 from three and 2-for-3 from the charity stripe.
  • Jordan Brown also grabbed a game-high eight boards for the Redhawks.
  • Roberts Wesleyan picked up eight steals, with the Spartans turning the ball over on 12 separate occasions.
  • Keonjay Carter led all Redhawks' scorers with eight first half points, while shooting 50.0 percent from both the field (3-for-6) and from beyond the arc (2-of-4).
  • Robert's Wesleyan's largest lead of the game came with just under 16 minutes to play in the first half of Friday's contest, when the Redhawks led by nine points, 15-6, on a Trey Kleitz layup.
  • Roberts Wesleyan's best shooting half came in the opening stanza, with the Redhawks hitting 14 of its 28 total shots for a 50.0 field goal percentage and 5 of its 11 three pointers for a 45.5 percent clip.
