Michigan, Hearns, Chatman & Green Fuel STAC's 93-86 Home Victory Against Caldwell

Sparkill, N.Y. - Four Spartans scored in double figures, as the St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Basketball team defeated the Caldwell University Cougars on Saturday afternoon, 93-86, at Aquinas Hall Gymnasium. 

STAC evens its record on the season at 2-2, while Caldwell falls to 0-4.

Joshua Michigan recorded a team-high 19 points for the maroon and gold, while teammates Starrell Hearns (18 points), Brennan Chatman (16 points) and Jordan Green (10 points) also factored in the Spartans' totals by scoring in double digits. Meanwhile, Melvin Evans tallied a game-high 23 points for the Cougars.

STAC shot 55.4 percent (36-65) from the field, while Caldwell shot 50.7 percent (34-67) from the floor.

STAC NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Ten Spartans logged double-digit minutes in the contest. 
  • Michael Parrotta led the maroon and gold with six assists on the day.
  • Joshua Michigan hit 8 of his 12 field goal attempts and 3-of-4 free throws. Meanwhile, Starrell Hearns went 7-for-10 from the floor.
  • STAC out-rebounded Caldwell by a 39-31 count, with Igor Gonzalez grabbing a team-high six boards for the Spartans.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas swiped six steals, with the Cougars turning the ball over on 15 separate occasions.
  • The Spartans earned advantages in three team statistical categories over Caldwell: Second Chance Points (16-15), Points in the Paint (52-50) and Bench Points (29-16).
  • The game featured one tie and no lead changes.
  • STAC's largest lead of the game came at the end of the first half of Saturday's contest, when Spartans led by 19 points, 51-32, on a Starrell Hearns layup.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas led Caldwell 51-32 going into the halftime locker room and shot 52.5 percent (21-40) from the field.
  • Brennan Chatman led the Spartans with 12 first half points, while shooting 66.7 percent (4-of-6) from both the floor and from downtown.
  • STAC's best shooting half came in the second stanza, as the Spartans shot 60.0 percent (15-25) from the field, 50.0 percent (2-4) from three and 71.4 percent (10-14) from the free-throw line.

CALDWELL NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS: 

  • Seven Cougars logged double-digit minutes in the contest. 
  • Melvin Evans led Caldwell with 23 points, while Isaiah Philbert (20 points), Todd Rochelle (15 points) and Jaryn Bull (10 points) also scored in double figures.
  • Rochelle also led Caldwell with six assists on the afternoon.
  • Evans went 10-for-15 from the floor. Meanwhile, Philbert went 8-for-16 from the field and 4-of-10 from beyond the arc.
  • Markeis Isley grabbed a game-high seven boards for the Cougars.
  • Caldwell picked up seven steals, with the Spartans turning the ball over on 16 separate occasions.
  • The Cougars earned just one advantage team statistical categories over St. Thomas Aquinas: Points Off Turnovers (18-13).
  • Melvin Evans led all scorers with 16 first half points for the Cougars, while shooting 63.6 percent (7-of-11) from the field.
  • Caldwell's best shooting half also came in the second stanza, as the Cougars shot 53.8 percent (32-39) from the field.
