Spartans Snap Winless Skid, Down Roberts Wesleyan 88-74

Rochester, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Basketball team snapped a six-game winless skid on Friday evening by downing Roberts Wesleyan University, 88-74, at the Voller Athletic Center in Western New York.

STAC moves to 7-9 overall and 4-1 in ECC action, while Roberts Wesleyan falls to 2-9 and 0-3.

Starrell Hearns led the way for the Spartans with a team-high 27 points, with teammates Derrick James (22 points) and Jordan Green (11 points) also scoring in double figures. Meanwhile, Keonjay Carter paced the host Redhawks with a game-high 29 points.

STAC shot 50.0 percent (33-66) from the field, while Roberts Wesleyan shot 45.6 percent (26-57) from the floor.

STAC NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Seven Spartans logged double-digit minutes in the contest. 
  • Derrick James led the maroon and gold with six assists on the night.
  • Starrell Hearns hit 9 of his 17 field goal attempts, with 2-of-6 shots falling from long range. He also went 7-of-9 from the foul line. Meanwhile, Derrick James went 8-for-12 from the floor and 4-of-5 from free-throw line.
  • STAC out-rebounded Roberts Wesleyan by a 45-27 count, with Derrick James and Michael Parrotta each grabbing a game-high seven boards for the Spartans.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas swiped five steals, with the Redhawks turning the ball over on 16 separate occasions.
  • The Spartans earned advantages in two team statistical categories over Roberts Wesleyan: Second Chance Points (26-10) and Points in the Paint (46-32).
  • The game featured nine ties and four lead changes.
  • STAC's largest lead of the game came with just over four minutes to play in the second half of Friday's contest, when the Spartans led by 19 points, 83-64, on a Derrick James three-point jump shot.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas and Roberts Wesleyan were deadlocked at 41 points apiece going into the halftime locker room, with the maroon and gold shooting 42.1 percent (16-38) from the field and 100.0 percent (5-5) from the charity stripe.
  • Starrell Hearns led all Spartans' scorers with 18 first half points, while shooting 64.0 percent (7-of-11) from the floor and 100.0 percent (2-of-2) from the foul line.
  • STAC's best shooting half came in the second stanza, as the Spartans shot 60.7 percent (17-28) from the field.

ROBERTS WESLEYAN NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Eight Redhawks logged double-digit minutes in the contest. 
  • Keonjay Carter led Roberts Wesleyan with 29 points, while Colin Woods (14 points), Jaden Lee (12 points) and Jordan Brown (10 points) also scored in double figures.
  • Brown also led Roberts Wesleyan with six assists on the evening.
  • Carter went 10-for-16 from the floor, 6-of-8 from long range and 3-of-4 from the free-throw line. Meanwhile, Woods went 6-for-17 from the field, and 2-for-3 from the charity stripe.
  • Colin Woods and Mohamed Soumahoro grabbed a team-high five boards apiece for the Redhawks.
  • Roberts Welseyan picked up five steals, with the Spartans turning the ball over on 16 separate occasions.
  • The Redhawks earned advantages in three team statistical categories over St. Thomas Aquinas: Points off Turnovers (21-18), Fastbreak Points (12-4) and Bench Points (15-11).
  • Roberts Wesleyan's largest lead of the game came with just under six and a half minutes to play in the first half of Friday's contest, when the Redhawks led by 10 points, 35-25, on a Collin Woods layup.
  • Keonjay Carter led all scorers with 19 first half points for the Redhawks, while shooting 60.0 percent (6-of-10) from the field, 80.0 percent (4-of-5) from three and 75.0 percent (3-of-4) from the free-throw line.
  • Roberts Wesleyan's best shooting half came in the opening stanza, as the Redhawks shot 51.9 percent (14-27) from the field and 53.8 percent (7-13) from long distance.
