Uniondale, N.Y. - St. Thomas Aquinas College freshman Clemence Papleux became the Spartans hero of the day on Saturday by tallying a natural hat trick, including the overtime game winner, in a thrilling 3-2 victory over Molloy University at Mitchel Field Athletic Complex on Long Island.
STAC moves to 3-5 overall and 2-2 in NE10 play, while Molloy falls 1-8 and 0-5.
As mentioned, the Spartans scored all three goals, courtesy of Clemence Papleux. In the cage, Ailsa Ogilvie (W, 3-4) got the start and was stellar through out the match. Ogilvie turned aside 8 of 10 shots sent her way to earn her third victory of the year.
Meanwhile, Catherine Amini and Farah Amarando tallied a goal apiece for the host Lions, while goalie Kayla Monique Lipscomb (L, 0-1) made six stops on nine shots in a losing effort.
How it Happened
- An first quarter offensive rush by the host Lions saw an initial shot by Farah Amarando turned aside by Spartans goalie Ailsa Ogilvie, but a loose rebound kicked off of Ogilvie's pads was put home by Catherine Amini to make it 1-0.
- Molloy doubled its lead at 2-0 in the third quarter, as off a penalty corner insert Samantha Naples found Farah Amarando for the blast that beat Ogilvie at the right post.
- STAC finally got on the board early in the fourth quarter, as Clemence Papleux received a short pass from Katelyn Cerrato and danced around several Lions defenders, firing a low shot by a diving Kayla Monique Lipscomb to cut the deficit to 2-1.
- Papleux's second goal of the afternoon came midway through the final stanza, as Catherine Horn's penalty corner insert found the stick of the freshman forward for the hard shot that skipped on the turf and went over the pad of Lipscomb and into the back of the cage to tie things at 2-2.
- In overtime, Clemence Papleux received a breakaway pass that was disrupted by both the Molloy goalie and defenders, resulting in a penalty stroke opportunity being awarded to STAC. With the game on her stick, Papleux converted on a soft, rising shot that got over the outstretched leg of Kayla Monique Lipscomb at the left post to give the maroon and gold the thrilling 3-2 overtime victory and the Spartans Field Hockey standout her third goal of the day.
