Steenbeeke's OT Winner Propels STAC Past D'Youville, 3-2

Buffalo, N.Y. - Playing in just her second-ever collegiate field hockey match, St. Thomas Aquinas College freshman Janiek Steenbeeke became the Spartans hero of the day on Sunday by netting two goals, including the overtime game winner, in a thrilling 3-2 victory over D'Youville University at Dobson Field in Western New York.

STAC moves to 1-1 on the young season, while D'Youville falls 0-4.

As mentioned, the Spartans received a pair of goals from Janiek Steenbeeke, with teammate Clemence Papleux scoring one of her own. In the cage, Ailsa Ogilvie (W, 1-0) got the start and was stellar through out the match. Ogilvie turned aside 15 of 17 shots sent her way to earn her first victory of the year.

Meanwhile, Madisyn Grawl tallied two goals for the host Saints, while goalie Georgiana Pool (L, 0-1) made four stops on seven shots in a losing effort.

How it Happened

  • Off of a penalty corner insertion by Morgan VanDover, Clemence Papleux sent a short pass over to an open Janiek Steenbeeke for the blast past goalie Georgiana Pool to make it 1-0 STAC.
  • A D'Youville turnover allowed the Spartans to march back up field with numbers, as an initial shot that was blocked by the Saints defense. However, Clemence Papleax would locate the loose rebound and put it home to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.
  • The Saints would pick up their first goal on a net mouth scramble following a penalty corner, as Madisyn Grawl poked the ball past a sprawling Ailsa Ogilvie with the help of teammate Addyson Trimbell to cut the lead to 2-1.
  • Just before halftime, D'Youville would knot the score at 2-2, as an offensive rush by the Saints set up a 2-on-1 chance with Nicole Chapungu sliding a pass to Madisyn Grawl for a shot that was initially stopped by ultimately put past Ogilvie by Grawl.
  • After two plus quarters of back and forth action by both the Spartans and Saints, the sides would head to overtime. Ailsa Ogilvie would stand on her head in the STAC cage, making multiple high-leverage saves to keep the game knotted up. However, late in the extra session, a perfect pass by Clemence Papleux would find the stick of Janiek Steenbeeke for the blast that went by Georgiana Pool and to the back of the net to give STAC the thrilling 3-2 triumph.
