Lady Spartans Take Two From Chestnut Hill, 10-6 & 1-0

The St. Thomas Aquinas softball team beat Chestnut Hill today, 10-6 and 1-0, winning their 4th game in a row.  Sharis Ruiz went 4-for-8 with 1 run for the day.  Heather Clausen went 3-for-8 with 3 runs and an RBI.  Megan Sweezy and Katie Meyers each had 3 RBI for STAC. 

In game one, STAC used a 4-run 3rd inning to take a 4-2 lead, highlighted by RBI singles from Toni Ann Groth, Sweezy and Victoria Tiso.  The Griffins added a run in the bottom of the inning as Caitlin O'Neill hit an RBI double to left field.  STAC scored in the top of the 4th as Groth reached on a fielders choice with bases loaded and Heather Clausen scored.  Clausen had singled up the middle for her first hit of the game.  The senior went 2-for-4 with 3 runs. 

Chestnut Hill would not go away quietly as they added two more runs in the bottom of the inning, tying the game at 5-5.  Neither team scored for the next three innings.  In the top of the 8th, STAC placed Michelle Sasso on second and she advanced to third on Clausen's second single for the day.  Rachael Hannawalt singled to third to load the bases.  Katie Meyers hit a 2-RBI double to give STAC a 7-5 lead with one out.  Megan Sweezy followed that with a 2-RBI single down the left field line.  Sweezy eventually came around to score on a wild pitch given the Lady Spartans their final run and putting them ahead, 10-5. 

The Griffins scored one final run in the bottom of the 8th, off an RBI single from Sarah Mattaliano.  Maura Power pitched 8 innings and struck out 9 batters. 

In game two, Ruiz hit a two out single to left field in the 7th inning.  Sasso followed with a hit to the same spot as Ruiz advacned to second.  Clausen doubled to score Ruiz and give STAC a 1-0 lead.  Sweezy got the win for STAC, striking out 6 batters. 

The Lady Spartans will travel to Bridgeport for an ECC double header starting at 3:00.
