Lady Spartans Split with Purple Knights
The St. Thomas Aquinas softball team continue their winning streak picking up an 8-4 victory on the road against the University of Bridgeport. STAC fell to the Purple Knights, 14-7 in game two. Michelle Sasso went 3-for-4 with an RBI in game one. Rachael Hannawalt had 3 hits for the day, 3 runs and 2 RBI.
In game one, Sharis Ruiz hit a sac fly RBI with runners on second and third to score Maura Power and give STAC a 1-0 lead. In the top of the 3rd, Hannawalt stole home to give STAC a 2-0 lead. Bridgeport used a 2-run bottom of the 4th to tie the game. In the 6th inning, STAC regained the lead off an RBI by Jamie McCormick but the Purple Knights tied it once again in the bottom of the inning, this time off a home run from Katelyn Wall.
The Lady Spartans used a 5-run 8th inning to keep the Purple Knights out of reach. The inning started off with singles from Katie Meyers, Megan Sweezy and Power to load the bases. McCormick and Ruiz batted in two runs and Hannawalt had a 2-RBI triple to make the score, 7-3. Sasso's single to left brought Hannawalt home for the Lady Spartans final run of the game. Bridgeport added a run in the bottom of the inning. Power had 5 strike outs in the win.
In game two, Bridgeport took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 2nd. The Lady Spartans responded quickly with a 6-run 3rd inning, highlighted by a 3 RBI triple by Sweezy. Alisa Cipolla added an RBI triple of her own, in the next at bat. Shelby Coyle started the scoring off with an RBI single in the inning. Bridgeport added a run in the bottom of the inning but the Lady Spartans answered in the top of the 4th with another RBI from Cipolla to give STAC a 7-3 lead. However, the Purple Knights used a 6-run inning in the 5th followed by another 5 runs in the 6th to overpower the Lady Spartans and take a 14-7 win. Sweezy had 3 strikeouts in the loss for STAC.
The Lady Spartans will return home for a double header on Thursday against Queens, starting at 3:30 PM.
