Lady Spartans Top Mercy, 4-3 & 4-2

The St. Thomas Aquinas softball team beat Mercy College, 4-3 and 4-2 on Saturday afternoon picking up their first ECC wins of the season.  Megan Sweezy went 3-for-6 with 2 runs and an RBI while Katie Meyers went 2-for-6 with 2 runs and an RBI for STAC.  Maura Power had a hit in each game for the Lady Spartans including the game winning RBI single in the 8th inning to give STAC the 4-3 win. 

In game one, Meyers hit an RBI double in the 4th to put STAC on the scoreboard, scoring Rachael Hannawalt.  Sweezy added an RBI single, to score Meyers and give STAC a 2-0 lead.  The Mavericks used a 3-run 7th inning to take the lead off a 2 RBI single from Jenna Ausiello.  In the bottom of the inning, Heather Clausen had an RBI ground out scoring Sharis Ruiz and tying the game.  Sweezy reached on an error and stole second putting herself in position to score the game winning run off Power's single.  Power had 7 strikeouts in the win.

Sweezy's lead off double in the 2nd inning in game two, sparked a 3-run inning for the Lady Spartans.  STAC added a run in the 3rd, off an RBI single from Victoria Tiso, scoring Meyers who led off with a single.  Mercy's two runs came in the 7th but their rally fell short as Sweezy struck out Jessica Doria for the final out.  Sweezy had 6 strike outs in the win for the Lady Spartans.

STAC will return to action on Monday as they travel to Chestnut Hill.
