The St. Thomas Aquinas softball team picked up their first ECC win topping Mercy, 4-1 before falling 6-2 in the second game. Sharis Ruiz went 3-for-4 with 1 run and 1 RBI in the win. Freshman Samantha Welsh picked up her first win on the mound with 5 hits, 1 run and 4 strike outs.
In the first game Alyssa Cataldo hit a double to score Heather Clausen as STAC went ahead 1-0. Mercy added their lone run in the fourth to tie the game, 1-1. The Spartans had a strong seventh inning putting up three runs. The inning was highlighted by a bases loaded two out single to left field by Angela Squillini scoring Ruiz and Welsh.
Later in the day, STAC got off to a quick start jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Ruiz walked and was later advanced to second and third. With runners on the corners, Ruiz scored on a double steal attempt as Squillini stole second and she stole home. Amanda Frosythe hit a double in the next at back scoring Squillini. Mercy exploded for six run in the sixth leading off with a home run by Chelsea Methot. STAC was unable to score in the seventh, falling, 6-2. Maura Power picked up the loss on the mound giving up 6 hits and 2 runs in 5 innings.
The Lady Spartans will host Bridgeport on Tuesday in their double header game that begins at 3:00 PM. Tuesday's game will also represent St. Thomas Aquinas' National Student Athlete Day were all the Spartan-Athletes with GPA's of 3.0 or higher will be honored in between games.
