Spartans Drop Opener to Rams, 66-60

The St. Thomas Aquinas men's basketball team lost to Philadelphia University, 66-60.  Justin Brown led STAC with 15 points and 4 rebounds.  Nick Lopez had 12 points including 2-2 from behind the arc and 4-5 from the free throw line.  Omar Kellman added a team high 7 boards.

The Spartans held the lead for most of the way in the first half until Chris Kuntz nailed a 3-pointer with :02 seconds on the clock to give the Rams a 35-33 lead at the break.  Brown had a team high 9 points in the first half while Lopez along with Dane Dixon each added 6 points.

Philadelphia went on a 7-2 run to open the second half.  Brown and Shaun Weaver each scored to bring the Spartans within three, 42-39.  The Rams extended their lead to 12 with 7:02 left in the game.  The Spartans continued to fight as they closed to within four behind a three pointer from Lopez with :34 seconds left in the game.  Philadelphia nailed two free throws to close the game.

Jimmy Connolly and Nick Christian led the Rams with 20 and 15 points respectively.  J.J. Gundry had a game high 10 rebounds for the Rams who held a 36-27 rebounding advantage.

The Spartans will play at Pace on Friday at 7:00 pm.
