Justin Karn enters his 2nd year as the STAC pitching coach. He wasted no time making an impact in his first year as the Spartans won the ECC Regular Season, ECC Tournament, and qualified for the East Regional, with the pitching staff playing a big role down the stretch. Robert Frank flourished under Karn’s leadership, logging 77 IP while striking out 95 batters and finishing 2nd in the nation in hits allowed per game. Frank also was honored as the D2BaseballNews.com National Pitcher of the Week after throwing a no-hitter and East Region Pitcher of the Week after striking out 15 batters in a seven-inning game. Freshman Robert Naughton was selected as the ECC Rookie of the Year (6-1, 1.54 ERA) & closer C.J. Ferriggi notched 8 saves and did not allow a hit or a run in 13.1 innings.
Before STAC he served as the interim head coach at Ulster County Community College in 2012 where he guided the youngest team in the Mid-Hudson Conference to their first play-off appearance in three years. The pitching staff led the Mid-Hudson Conference in team ERA for the 2nd consecutive year and Freshman Cody Markle led all JUCO's nationally with a .79 ERA. The offense ranked 2nd in team batting average and four Ulster players were selected to the all-conference team. Prior to serving as the head coach he was the pitching at Ulster from 2009-2011. In the 2011 Karn's pitchers led the league in ERA and were 2nd in most Ks and fewest hits allowed.
Since 2009 Coach Karn has served in three collegiate leagues. In 2009 he served as the Pitching Coach for the Long Island Mustangs of the Hamptons League (ACBL). In 2011 he served as the Pitching Coach for the N.Y. Atlantics of the ACBL, leading them to the Divisional Championship game. In 2012 he assumed the head coaching duties for the expansion L.I. Shamrocks of the ACBL, guiding them to a play-off appearance in their inaugural season. In 2013 he was hired as a manager in the newly formed North Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League (NACBL)
Prior to the start of his coaching career, Coach Karn played for the Gaels of Iona College, hurling nearly 100 innings during his four year career. He was a two-year team captain and was selected to the All-MAAC Academic Team in 2006. During his four year academic career he maintained a 3.1 GPA en route to completing a B.S. in Political Science. Before college, Coach Karn was three-year varsity letter-winner at Arlington HS in Dutchess County, earning All-League, All-County and All-Section honors. He was named to Baseball Digest's preseason All-American honorable mention as a senior and pitched at the Empire State Games in 2003 for the Hudson Valley. In 2004 he played in the Connie Mack World Series for the South Troy Dodgers.
