The St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Triathlon team has qualified two individual athletes for the upcoming USA Triathlon Collegiate National Championships by virtue of their finishes in recent East Regional Qualifier, which was held in Huddleston, Virginia.
Spartan Triathletes Samantha Biss (Sr./Ringwood, N.J.) and Phoebe Hemmerling (So./Baton Rouge, La.) will now advance to the Division II National Championships, which will be held in Tempe, Arizona on November 13. The event, hosted by Arizona State University, will consist of a 750 Meter Lake Swim (0.46 Miles/1 lap), a 20K Bicycle Race (12.42 Miles/3 laps) and a 5K Run (3.10 Miles/2 laps).
At the East Regional Qualifier, both Biss and Hemmerling recorded outstanding performances in a grueling race that unfortunately saw one Spartan teammate lap out, while another had her day ended due to an equipment failure (flat tire) on her bike. However, despite the setbacks, Samantha and Phoebe both finished the race and represented the college very well in only their second and third triathlon events, respectively.
This will be the program's third consecutive trip to the USA Triathlon Collegiate National Championships, as the Spartans full teams qualifed in both 2018 and 2019.
