Orlando, Fla. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Tennis team earned its second straight Sunshine State win on Wednesday by slipping past Minnesota State University - Moorhead, 4-3, at the USTA Lake Nona Campus.
STAC moves to 3-5 on the year, while MSUM falls to 3-6.
Doubles
Doubles play began with the No. 3 match being awarded to Lydia Sparby and Autumn Kron by default over Chanelle Russell and Monica Martinez Blucher. STAC quickly tied things up at No. 2, as Mar Caneves Bufi and Shreethika Vangala cruised to a 6-2 win over Camilla Bonini and Katryna Hansen. The final doubles match to finish came at No. 1, where Kateryna Kryuchkova and Sun Zhuoxuan battled in a close contest before falling 7-6 (7-5) in a tiebreak to Sophia Felderman and Luzmary Diaz Castillo to give Minnesota State - Moorhead the first point of the match.
Singles
In singles play, the first result came at No. 6, where Alayna Johnson defeated Chanelle Russell 6-0, 6-0 to put MSUM ahead 2-0. The Dragons then added another point shortly after at No. 5, with Camilla Bonini topping Monica Martinez Blucher 6-0, 6-0 to put the maroon and gold on the ropes. However, the never-quit Spartans responded with four straight singles victories to close the match. Mar Caneves Bufi got STAC on the board in singles with a strong 6-3, 6-0 win over Katryna Hansen at No. 2. Shreethika Vangala followed with a decisive 6-2, 6-0 victory against Autumn Kron at No. 4. At No. 3 singles, Sun Zhuoxuan controlled her match from start to finish, defeating Sophia Felderman 7-5, 6-2. Kateryna Kryuchkova capped off the day for the Spartans at the top spot, earning a 6-1, 6-2 win over Luzmary Diaz Castillo.
