Orlando, Fla. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Tennis team opened its annual Sunshine State spring break tour on Monday, by defeating East Stroudsburg University, 4-3, at the USTA Lake Nona Campus.
STAC moves to 2-5 on year, while East Stroudsburg falls to 6-4.
Doubles
The first match to conclude came at No. 3 doubles, where Estefania Vivas and Bega Gotor were awarded a win by default over Chanelle Russell and Monica Martinez Blucher. STAC earned a victory at No. 1 doubles as Kateryna Kryuchkova and Sun Zhuoxuan defeated Jenna Kastell and Ariel Kelsick, 6-3. The final doubles match to finish was at No. 2, where Shreethika Vangala and Mar Caneves Bufi secured a 7-5 triumph over Lea Stefanovic and Theresa Bauer, completing doubles and giving STAC a 1-0 lead heading into singles.
Singles
The first singles result came at No. 6, where Claudia Ermina Perez earned the win by default over Chanelle Russell to tie things up at 1-1. STAC retook the lead in No. 1 singles, with Kateryna Kryuchkova cruising past Lea Stefanovic in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1. ESU then evened things up once again, this time at 2-2 at No. 5 singles as Bega Gotor recorded a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Monica Martinez Blucher. At No. 2 singles, Mar Caneves Bufi delivered another strong performance for STAC, defeating Ariel Kelsick 6-1, 6-1 to put them up 3-2. The longest match of the day came at No. 4 singles, where Jenna Kastell rallied to defeat Shreethika Vangala 6-2, 1-6, 1-0 (7) in a match tiebreak to make it 3-3. The final match to finish was at No. 3 singles, where Sun Zhuoxuan battled past Audrey Conover 7-5, 6-2 to close out the day and give the maroon and gold a hard-earned 4-3 victory.
