Boyd, Md. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Tennis team picked up their fifth win in the last eight matches during the month of March, with a 5-2 victory over the University of the District of Columbia at the Montgomery TennisPlex.
STAC moves to 6-7 overall and 3-4 in ECC play, while UDC falls to 6-6 and 1-2.
Doubles
STAC opened the match by securing the doubles point with wins at the No. 3 and No. 2 positions. Chanelle Russell & Monica Martinez Blucher picked up a win by default, but the Firebirds evened things when Celia Bastin & Polina Zelentsova beat Kateryna Kryuchkova & Sun Zhuoxuan 6-3. Finally, Shreethika Vangala & Mar Caneves Bufi bested Lina Benjelloun & Sofiia Shaparenko (UDC), 6-4.
Singles
In singles play, STAC captured three straight victories to secure the match. Chanelle Russell picked up a default win at No. 6 singles. Kateryna Kryuchkova followed with a 6-4, 6-2 victory against Polina Zelentsva at No. 1 singles. In the No. 2 spot, Mar Caneves Bufi sealed the Spartans' fourth point with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Celia Bastin. No. 4 Sun Zhuoxuan dispatched Sofiia Shaparenko to earn the fifth point.
UDC claimed wins at No. 3 and No. 5 singles, but it was not enough to overcome STAC's advantage.
