Women's Basketball Overwhelmed By D'Youville in 71-38 Loss

Sparkill, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Basketball team struggled to contain the hot shooting of D'Youville University in a 71-38 loss on Friday evening at Aquinas Hall Gymnasium.

STAC falls to 2-7 overall and 1-2 in ECC play, while D'Youville improves to 5-4 and 3-0.

Jona Kabashi led maroon and gold offense with 10 points. Meanwhile, Molly O'Toole led all scorers, recording 20 points for the visiting Saints.

St. Thomas Aquinas shot an anemic 25.5 percent from the field (13-51), while D'Youville shot 53.1 percent (26-49) from the floor and 41.9 percent (13-31) from beyond the arc.

STAC NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Nine Spartans logged double-digit minutes in the contest.
  • Bailey Chapman, Abby Jacoby, Katie Purpura and Toni Schuetze led the maroon and gold with an assist apiece on the evening.
  • Jona Kabashi hit 3 of her 11 field goal attempts and all four of her free throws.
  • D'Youville out-rebounded STAC by a 38-27 margin, with Kabashi also grabbing a team-high six boards for the Spartans.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas picked up 10 steals, with the Saints turning the ball over on 19 separate occasions.
  • The Spartans earned advantages in two team statistical categories over D'Youville: Second Chance Points (6-4) and Bench Points (20-15).
  • The game featured two ties and five lead changes.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas trailed D'Youville, 28-22 at the half and shot 26.0 percent (7-27) from the field and 75.0 percent (6-8) from the foul line.
  • Jona Kabashi led all Spartans scorers with eight first half points, while shooting 33.3 percent (3-of-9) from the field and 100.0 percent (2-for-2) from the foul line.

D'YOUVILLE NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Nine Saints logged double-digit minutes in the contest. 
  • Molly O'Toole led all scorers with 20 points D'Youville, while teammates Aliviya Vallone Russell (16 points) and Morgan Giancaterino (13 points) also scored in double digits.
  • Megan Fedor led D'Youville with seven on the night.
  • O'Toole went 7-for-12 from the floor and 6-of-11 from long range, with Vallone Russell hitting 6 of her 9 field goal attempts and 4-of-6 shots connecting from beyond the arc.
  • Fedor also grabbed a game-high eight boards for the Saints.
  • D'Youville picked up seven steals, with the Spartans turning the ball over on 20 separate occasions.
  • The Saints earned advantages in two team statistical categories over St. Thomas Aquinas: Points off Turnovers (18-11) and Points in the Paint (20-18).
  • D'Youville had its largest lead of the game (35 points) with just under five and a half minutes to play in the contest, 66-31, on a Molly O'Toole three-point jump shot.
  • Molly O'Toole led all scorers at the half with 14 points for the Saints, while shooting 62.5 percent (5-of-8) from the floor and 57.1 percent (4-of-7) from downtown.
  • D'Youville's best shooting quarter came in the third stanza, with the Saints shooting 64.3 percent (9-14) from the field and 62.5 percent (5-8) from beyond the arc.
