Sparkill, N.Y. - A fourth quarter run by their opponents sent the St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Basketball to 51-48 defeat at the hands of Caldwell University on Sunday afternoon at Aquinas Hall Gymnasium.
STAC falls to 1-5 on the year, while Caldwell improves to 5-1.
Freshman Toni Schuetze posted a team-high nine points for the Spartans, while both Bailey Chapman and Trinity Cheatom recorded eight points apiece. Meanwhile, Lucy Coogan led all scorers with 17 points for the visiting Cougars.
St. Thomas Aquinas shot 29.3 percent (17-58) from the field and 90.0 percent (9-10) from the charity stripe, while Caldwell shot 31.3 percent (15-48) from the floor.
STAC NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:
- Eight Spartans logged double-digit minutes in the contest.
- Delaney Finnegan led the maroon and gold with three assists on the afternoon.
- Toni Schuetze hit 3 of her 8 field goal attempts and both of her free-throw attempts. Trinity Cheatom went 3-for-8 from the floor and 2-of-4 from distance.
- STAC out-rebounded Caldwell by a 44-38 margin, with Bailey Chapman and Iyana Morel both grabbing a team-high eight boards for the Spartans.
- St. Thomas Aquinas picked up nine steals, with the Cougars turning the ball over on 19 separate occasions.
- The Spartans earned advantages in three team statistical categories over Caldwell: Points in the Paint (22-18), Fastbreak Points (4-0) and Bench Points (16-6).
- STAC had its largest lead of the game (eight points) late in the third quarter, 36-28, on an Abby Jacoby free throw.
- The game featured two ties and ten lead changes.
- St. Thomas Aquinas trailed Caldwell 25-20 at the half and shot 26.7 percent (8-of-30) from the field and a perfect 100.0 percent (2-of-2) from the free-throw line.
- Toni Schuetze led all scorers with nine first half points for the Spartans, while shooting 50.0 percent (3-of-6) from the floor, 50.0 percent (1-for-2) from long range and 100.0 percent (2-for-2) from the foul line.
- St. Thomas Aquinas' best shooting quarter came in the second stanza, with the Spartans shooting 42.9 percent (6-14) from the field and 50.0 percent (2-2) from three.
CALDWELL NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:
- Seven Cougars logged double-digit minutes in the contest.
- Lucy Coogan led Caldwell with 17 points, while teammate Jah'Nel Lewis (15 points) also scored in double figures.
- Lewis and Harmony Earth-Wiley led Dominican with two assists apiece on the day.
- Coogan went 5-for-11 from the floor, 3-of-5 from three-point and 4-for-8 from the foul line. Lewis connected on 3-of-15 field goal attempts and 8-of-14 free throws.
- Coogan also grabbed a game-high nine boards for the Cougars.
- Caldwell picked up 11 steals, with the Spartans turning the ball over on 21 separate occasions.
- The Cougars earned two advantages in the team statistical categories over St. Thomas Aquinas: Points Off Turnovers (13-11) and Second Change Points (10-0).
- Caldwell had its largest lead of the game (five points) late in the first quarter, 5-0, on a Lucy Coogan free throw.
- Jah'Nel Lewis led all Cougars' scorers at the half with six points, while shooting 11.1 percent (1-for-9) from the floor and 100.0 percent (4-for-4) from the foul line.
- Caldwell's best shooting quarter came in the fourth quarter, with the Cougars shooting 50.0 percent (5-10) from the field and 60.0 percent (3-5) from beyond the arc.
