STAC Women's Basketball Can't Overcome Turnover-Riddled Performance, Falls 69-49 at Saint Michael's

Colchester, Vt. - Twenty nine total turnovers, including sixteen in the second half, sent the St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Basketball team to its third straight defeat, 69-49 against Saint Michael's College on Wednesday afternoon at the Ross Sports Center.

STAC falls to 2-9 overall, while St. Michael's improves to 5-3 on the season.

Abby Jacoby led the maroon and gold offense with 15 points, while Iyana Morel (12 points) also scored in double digits. Meanwhile, Molly Brophy led all Purple Knights players in scoring with 22 points of her own.

STAC shot 40.5 percent (17-42) from the field, 40.0 percent (6-15) from three and 75.0 percent (9-12) from the foul line, while St. Michael's shot 41.4 percent (24-58) from the floor.

STAC NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Eight Spartans logged double-digit minutes in the contest.
  • Abby Jacoby and Bailey Chapman led the maroon and gold with three assists apiece on the afternoon.
  • Jacoby hit 6 of her 10 field goal attempts, with 3-of-4 shots sailing through the nets from long distance. Iyana Morel went 3-for-5 from the floor and 6-of-8 from the foul line.
  • STAC out-rebounded Saint Michael's by a 31-27 margin, with Bailey Chapman grabbing a game-high ten boards for the Spartans.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas picked up nine steals, with the Purple Knights turning the ball over on 13 separate occasions.
  • The game featured two ties and 12 lead changes.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas led Saint Michael's, 32-29 at the half and shot 50.0 percent (10-20) from the field, 57.1 percent (4-7) from beyond the arc and 80.0 percent (8-10) from the foul line.
  • Iyana Morel led all scorers with ten first half points for the Spartans, while shooting 66.7 percent (2-of-3) from the field and 75.0 percent (6-for-8) from the foul line.
  • Despite leading by three points after the first 20 minutes of action, the Spartans were outscored 40-17 the rest of the way.

SAINT MICHAEL'S NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Nine Purple Knights logged double-digit minutes in the contest. 
  • Molly Brophy led all scorers with a game-high 22 points for Saint Michael's.
  • Ashlee Talbot led Saint Michael's with six on the night.
  • Brophy went 7-for-12 from the floor, 3-of-7 from long range and 5-of-6 from the free-throw line.
  • Brophy and Ava McDonough grabbed a team-high four boards apiece for the Purple Knights.
  • Saint Michael's picked up 18 steals, with the Spartans turning the ball over on 29 separate occasions.
  • The Purple Knights earned advantages in five team statistical categories over St. Thomas Aquinas: Points off Turnovers (37-4), Second Chance Points (8-6), Points in the Paint (28-18), Fastbreak Points (8-2) and Bench Points (28-21).
  • Saint Michael's had its largest lead of the game (21 points) with just under two minutes to play in the contest, 68-47, on a pair of Molly Brophy free throws.
  • Molly Brophy, Kelli Cieplicki and Margaret Montplaisir led all Purple Knights' scorers at the half with seven points each.
  • Saint Michaels' best shooting quarter came in the final stanza, with the Purple Knights shooting 45.5 percent (5-11) from the field and 68.8 percent (11-16) from the charity stripe.
