STAC Women's Hoops Battles To Take 59-53 Victory At Queens

Queens, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak by taking down Queens College, 59-53, on Saturday afternoon at Fitzgerald Gymnasium.

STAC moves to 5-15 overall and 3-6 in ECC action, while Queens slips to 5-4 and 2-6.

Freshman standout Toni Schuetze posted a game-high 19 points for the Spartans, while teammate Bailey Chapman (11 points) also scored in double figures. Meanwhile, Daja White led the host Knights with a team-high 18 points.

St. Thomas Aquinas shot 40.7 percent (22-54) from the field, while Queens shot 35.6 percent (21-59) from the floor.

STAC NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Six Spartans logged double-digit minutes in the non-conference contest. 
  • Cassidy Mahaney and Abby Jacoby led the maroon and gold with three assists apiece on the day.
  • Toni Schuetze hit 8 of her 16 field goal attempts. Meanwhile, Bailey Chapman went 3-of-9 from the floor and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe.
  • Queens out-rebounded STAC by a 36-32 margin, with Jona Kabashi grabbing a team-high 12 boards for the Spartans.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas picked up four steals, with the Knights turning the ball over on 15 separate occasions.
  • The Spartans earned advantages in three team statistical categories over Queens: Points off Turnovers (15-10), Second Chance Points (13-10) and Points in the Paint (30-22).
  • The game featured six ties and six lead changes.
  • STAC's largest lead of the game came with just under five minutes to play in the third stanza, when the Spartans led by 13 points, 37-24, on a Bailey Chapman three-point jump shot.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas led Queens 24-21 going into the halftime locker room, and shot 36.0 percent (9-25) from the field and 100.0 percent (4-4) from the foul line.
  • Toni Schuetze led all scorers with eight first half points for the Spartans, while shooting 50 percent from both the floor (3-of-6) and downtown (2-of-4).
  • STAC's best shooting quarter came in the final frame, with the maroon and gold hitting 7 of its 14 total shots for a 50.0 field goal percentage.

QUEENS NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Seven Knights logged double-digit minutes in the contest. 
  • Daja White led Queens' offense with 18 points, while teammate Nkiru Awaka (13 points) also scored in double digits.
  • White also led Queens with five assists on the afternoon.
  • White went 7-for-23 from the floor, with Awaka hitting 5-of-8 field goal attempts and 3-of-5 foul shots.
  • Nkiru Awaka also grabbed a game-high 13 boards for the Knights.
  • Queens picked up seven steals, with the Spartans turning the ball over on 17 separate occasions.
  • The Knights earned advantages in two team statistical categories over St. Thomas Aquinas: Fastbreak Points (6-4) and Bench Points (10-6).
  • Queens had its largest lead of the game (four points) with just under seven and half minutes to play in the first quarter, 6-2, on a Chinyere Ukaegbu layup.
  • Yinka Kruyswijk led all Knighs' scorers at the half with seven points, while shooting 100 percent from both the floor (3-for-3) and from beyond the arc (1-for-1).
  • Queens' best shooting quarter came in the second frame, with the Knights shooting 55.6 percent from the field (5-9) and 50.0 percent from long range (1-2).
