Spartans' Offense Stalls in 58-43 Loss at Jefferson

Philadelphia, Pa. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Basketball team had trouble finding its offense on Saturday, as the Spartans suffered a 58-43 defeat at the hands of Jefferson University in a non-conference tilt at the Gallagher Center in the City of Brotherly Love.

STAC falls to 2-10 overall, while Jefferson improves to 7-4 on the year.

Jona Kabashi led the maroon and gold offense with game-high 19 points. Meanwhile, Carolyn Sipprell led all Rams players in scoring with 17 points of her own.

STAC shot 29.2 percent (14-48) from the field and 73.3 percent (11-15) from the foul line, while Jefferson shot 40.7 percent (22-54) from the floor.

STAC NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Eight Spartans logged double-digit minutes in the contest.
  • Abby Jacoby, Bailey Chapman and Cassidy Mahaney led the maroon and gold with three assists apiece on the afternoon.
  • Jona Kabashi hit 7 of her 14 field goal attempts, with 1-of-2 shots sailing through the nets from long distance. She also went 4-for-5 from the foul line.
  • STAC and Jefferson tallied 37 rebounds apiece, with Delaney Finnegan grabbing a team-high seven boards for the Spartans.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas picked up eight steals, with the Rams turning the ball over on 16 separate occasions.
  • The Spartans earned one advantage in the team statistical categories over Jefferson: Bench Points (7-4).
  • The game featured one tie and no lead changes.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas trailed Jefferson, 29-24 at the half and shot 37.0 percent (10-27) from the field and 30.8 percent (4-13) from beyond the arc.
  • Jona Kabashi led all Spartans' scorers with 11 first half points for the Spartans, while shooting 62.5 percent (5-of-8) from the field and 100.0 percent (1-for-1) from the three-point line.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas' best shooting quarter came in the second stanza, with the Spartans shooting 57.1 percent (8-14) from the field and 66.7 percent (2-3) from three. 

JEFFERSON NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Six Rams logged double-digit minutes in the contest. 
  • Carolyn Sipprell paced Jefferson's offense with 17 points, while teammates Emily Spratt (15 points) and Gabby Recinto (12 points) also scored in double digits.
  • Spratt also led Jefferson with six assists on the day.
  • Sipprell went 6-for-12 from the floor and 5-of-7 from the charity stripe, with Spratt hitting 5-of-12 field goal attempts and 5-of-8 foul shots.
  • Carolyn Sipprell also grabbed a game-high 11 boards for the Rams.
  • Jefferson picked up 15 steals, with the Spartans turning the ball over on 25 separate occasions.
  • The Rams earned advantages in three team statistical categories over St. Thomas Aquinas: Points off Turnovers (17-7), Second Chance Points (15-7) and Points in the Paint (28-18)
  • Jefferson had its largest lead of the game (15 points) with just under 90 seconds to play in the fourth quarter, 58-43, on pair of Carolyn Sipprell free throws.
  • Carolyn Sipprell led all Rams' scorers at the half with 11 points, while shooting 66.7 percent (4-of-6) from the floor and 75.0 percent (3-of-4) from the foul line.
  • Jefferson's best shooting quarter came in the opening stanza, with the Rams shooting 53.8 percent (7-13) from the field and 66.7 percent (2-3) from the free-throw line.
