The Spartan Regional Invite was contested on Friday, January 15th 2016 at the newly opened Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island. Over 800 Athletes in 20 schools competed in the first track and field meet ever hosted by St. Thomas Aquinas College. The Teams that participated included: Adelphi, American Int'l, Assumption, Bowie State, Delaware State, District of Columbia, Franklin Pierce. Georgian Court, Holy Family, Ithaca, Lafayette, LIU Post, Loyola (Md), Manhattan, Marist, Merrimack, Molloy, New Haven, Queens (N.Y.), Rider, So. Conn. St., St. Thomas Aquinas College.
The Spartans had some great performances from Winslow Dorsainvil and Saint-Jacob Diodonet. Winslow Dorsainvil started out the day by winning the 60 meter dash in a time of 6.87. Dorsainvil is currently ranked 3rd in the country in the 60 with a time of 6.79. Saint-Jacob Diodonet won the 400 meters and the 200 meters in the inaugural meet for the Spartans. His times in the two events were 49.14 in the 400 which is the top time in the region so far and 22.18. Saint is ranked 11th in the nation currently in the 200 and 23rd in the 60 meters and leads the region in the 200 and 400. Tristan Holmgren jumped 2.0 meters (6'6.75) to take 3rd in the high jump. Tristan is currently ranked 18th in the country in the High Jump.
The Lady Spartans also had some great performances from a couple of competitors as well. Gabby Sloezen took 3rd overall in the 400 with a new school record time of 58.16 in the 400 meters. Patricia Nersten finished 8th overall in the 800 with a time of 2:26.68. Meaghan Ventarola took 4th place overall in the mile with a time of 5:17.72. Katherine Mollahan took 7th overall in the shot-put with a throw of 11.19 meters (36'8.5).
The Spartans and Lady Spartans would like to thank all of the parents, friends, alumni and others who took time from their busy schedules to help volunteer at the Spartan Regional Invite. The Spartans will next be competing at the Gotham Cup Next Friday at the Ocean Breeze facility.
