Men Finish 2nd, Women 3rd at ECC Championships

The St. Thomas Aquinas Men's & Women's Track & field teams competed in the East Coast Conference Indoor Championship at the Ocean Breeze Facility in  Staten Island.  The Men's team finished in 2nd place to Roberts Wesleyan while the women had a program best finish in the ECC Indoor Championship by taking 3rd.

On the men's side, Winslow Dorsainvil and Saint Jacob Diodonet took 1st and 2nd in the 60 meter dash.  Dorsainvil clocked in at 6.83 and Diodonet clocked in at 6.96.  Dorsainvil's 6.83 was a new indoor ECC meet record.  Not to be outdone, Diodonet came back in the 200 and 400 taking 1st place in those events with new meet record times of 22.04 and 48.71.  Dorsainvil also placed 5th in the the 200 and Ricardo Reid took 6th overall in the 400.  In the 500, Dylan Bestler took 4th overall and Frankie Schiavone took 5th. In the 1000 meters Vinny Vazquez took 2nd overall and Ryan Gasser took 4th overall.  In the Men's Mile Joseph Lipari took 6th overall in a time of 4:39.  Jamer Linares took 6th in the 5000 meters with a new personal record of 16:44.09.  Tristan Holmgren took 1st in the high Jump with and 4th in the 60 hurdles with Tarique Wilson taking 5th in the event. 

In the field events, Frankie Schiavone took 2nd in the pole vault.  In the Long Jump, Justin Brown took 3rd place, Travis Volpe took 5th place and Elais Guardado took 6th place.  In the Triple Jump Elias Guardado took 3rd place, Justin Brown took 4th place and Mohammed Ifthikar took 5th place. 

The Men's Distance Medley Relay team of Ryan Gasser, Christian Diaz, Dylan Bestler, and Vinny Vazquez took 1st place with a time of 10:50.30.  The 4x400 team of Frankie Schiavone, Ricardo Reid, Saint-Jacob Diodonet and Dylan Bestler took 3rd place overall.

On the Women's side there were equally great performance and school records being broken. In the 400, Gabby Sloezen took 2nd overall with a time of 59.14.  Rebecca Fortoul took 6th overall in the 500 with a time of 1:23.57.  In the 1000 Kristen Borriello ran 3:04.56 taking 1st overall in the event.  Meaghan Ventarola took 2nd place in the mile with a time of 5:14.60 and then came back to run in the 3000 meters where she also took 2nd place.  Katie O'Grady took 4th place in the 5000 meters breaking the school record as well as a new personal best in the race with a time of 18:49.13.  Molly Conner also broke her school record time in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 9.94. 
The Women's DMR team of Patricia Nersten, Marissa Connolly, Amber Lubaszka and Kristen Borriello took 1st place in the DMR in a time of 12:59.08.  The Women's 4x400 team of Terisha Theodore, Amber Lubaszka, Kristen Borriello, and Gabby Sloezen took 4th place overall. 
In the Shot Put Katie Mollahan took 2nd place as well as Kelsey Barnes taking 6th place overall.  In the Long Jump Laura Gerraputa took 5th place overall with a jump of 4.85m(15'11).  Breanna Lyn took 5th place in the Triple Jump with a jump of 10.48m(34'4.75).

The Spartans next team meet will be their first outdoor competition against Nova Southeastern on March 16th followed by the Hurricane Invitational at the University of Miami on March 18-19.
