The St. Thomas Aquinas Men's Track & Field team have been named the 2013 East Coast Conference Co-Champions. The Spartans tied with Queens College with a final team score of 165 to earn their first Outdoor Track & Field conference title since becoming a NCAA DII member. The women's team finished in 6th place.
Junior George Erazo took 1st Place finishes in the 400 meter dash, 400 meter Hurdles, 2nd place in the 200 and 3rd place in the 100 meters. Mike Abelard took 1st Place in the 200, 2nd place in the 100, and 3rd place in the 400.
In one of the hardest triples to accomplish, Joseph Capolino, a freshman, took 4th in the 10000, 4th in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a new personal record of 10:18.09 and came back with a 5th place finish in the 5000 meters in a time of 16;26.91. SophomoreJoe Chegwidden hit a new personal best in the 3000 meter steeplechase in a time of 9:53.25. Senior Garvenchy Nicolas took 2nd place in the 800 and 1500 in times of 1:56.31 and 4:05.81. Junior Matt Buell took 5th in the 1500 in a new personal best time of 4:08.92. Classmate Mike Kraus took 6th in the steeplechase with a time of 10:57.16.
Sophomore Ed Oswald took 2nd place in the 400 Hurdles as well as 3rd place in the High Jump. Junior Frankie Colon took 4th place in the Triple Jump, 400 meter dash, and 5th place in the 200 meter dash.
In the relays the men took 1st place in the 4x100,4x400 and 4x800. The 4x100 team of Oswald, Abelard, Colon, and Erazo ran a time of 43.46 to win the relay. The 4x400 team of Abelard, Ed Oswald, and Erazo also took 1st place with a time of 3:24.83. The 4x800 team of Chegwidden, Kraus, Buell, andNicolas ran a new school record time of 7:59.30 also taking 1st place.
On the women's side, junior Keeley Bateman hit a new personal best in the 1500 with a time of 4:57.89 taking 4th. She also took 6th in the 800 with a time of 2:25.98. Junior Allison Borriello took 2nd in the 800 in a time of 2:21.41. The women's 4x400 team of Borriello, Gina Funaro, Rebecca Fortoul, and Gabriela Sloezen took 5th place with a time of 4:15.90.
The last meet for the Spartans will be on Thursday at Cheyney College.
