Spartans Return to Boston University for Valentine’s Day Invitational

The St. Thomas Aquinas track & field team returned to Boston University this past weekend to compete in the BU Valentine's Day Invitational.  Senior Chris Muniz hit a provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA Nationals in the men's 400-meter, clocking a 48.25.

On the women's side, sophomores Lisa Brevogel and Sarah Callagy both competed in the mile on Friday. Callagy clocked a time of 5:46.42, while Brevogel clocked a time of 6:36.89.  Fellow sophomore distance runner Chelsea Klinger competed in the 800-meter dash and clocked a time of 2:38.31.  Senior Jeanette Gibson returned to the throwing circle for the shot put and logged a throw of 10.59 meters, which placed her 24th overall.

On the men's side, senior Einar Brissing competed in the mile clocking a time of 4:27.20.  Junior teammate Vincent Modafferi raced the 800-meter and ran 1:59.27 respectively.

The sprinting squad saw a great amount of success on Saturday as Muniz toed to the line in the 400-meter dash and presented a blistering time of 48.25, a season best, lifetime best, and NCAA DII National qualifying mark.  This time launched Muniz even higher in the National ranks as he is now the 6th fastest DII 400-meter runner in the Nation.  Muniz quickly recovered from his noteworthy efforts in the 400m and returned to race the 200m dash, where he clocked a time of 22.02, placing him 17th overall.

Freshman Mike Abelard also raced in the 200m dash and ran a time of 22.05 respectively.  His mark placed him close behind Muniz for 19th place.

The Spartan men and women will compete against the Big Red Ivy Leaguers up at Cornell University for the Deneault Invitational on Saturday.
