Spartans Run Record Times in Great Dane Classic

The St. Thomas Aquinas College track team ran record times at Great Dane Classic held at the Armory in NYC on Friday.  The Lady Spartans set a new school record in the Distance Medley Relay while senior Chris Muniz ran a person best in the 200m.

The women opened the day with the DMR, which consists of a 1200, 400, 800 and mile.  Sophomore Sarah Callagy led off in the 1200, handing off to senior Jeanette Gibson, then to sophomore Lisa Brevogel and sophomore Chelsea Klinger closed.  Together the young team ran a time of 13:52.95, setting a new STAC record.

Freshman Mike Abelard doubled up in the 55m dash and the 200m dash.  Abelard clocked a blistering time in both events, making the championship heats for both.  The rookie ran 6.53 seconds in the 55m placing him 5th out of the 55 competitors.  Abelard's time of 22:03 in the 200m placed him 8th out of 43 runners. 

Muniz also raced in the 200m running an indoor personal record of 22:37 for 17th place.  Muniz also raced in the 400m and clocked a season best of 49.54 which placed 8th overall.  Freshman Rich Ricca had a successful race in the 55m dash running a lifetime best of 6.70.

The Spartans also competed in the men's 4x400m relay consisting of Abelard, Muniz, Ricca and senior mid-distance runner Vinny Modafferi clocking a time of 3:25.23.  Lady Spartan Jeanette Gibson also competed in the shot put throwing a season best 10.66 meters.

The Spartans will compete in the Terrier Classic at Boston University next weekend.
