Sparkill, N.Y. - St. Thomas Aquinas College’s Olivia Leon was named first-team and teammate Sofia Marella earned second-team honors on the prestigious National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-East Region softball team announced Friday.

Leon (Stony Point, NY) was selected as the top catcher while Marella (Cranston, RI) was tabbed as the Designated Player on the second team. The standout players helped the Spartans win the East Coast Conference championship and a berth in this week’s NCAA Division II East Region tournament. 

A total of 26 players were named to the all-star team from 26 teams in the ECC, Central Atlantic College Conference and the Northeast-10. The three conferences feature teams from seven states.

Leon and Marella were also both named first-team All-ECC selections. 

Leon, a tri-captain, has enjoyed her best season of her three-year collegiate career. She owns an impressive batting average of .367 and a gaudy on-base percentage of .426. The junior leads the team with 16 doubles and has also contributed three homers, 26 RBI and 55 hits. Leon has also excelled defensively. 

Marella was the team’s best offensive player. She leads the team in batting average (.434), homers (16), hits (63) and RBI (58). Her on-base percentage is a startling .500.
