Sparkill, N.Y. - Elyse Marcano's trio of stolen bases for St. Thomas Aquinas College in Thursday's softball doubleheader against College of Staten Island, set a new career mark for the program and helped to propel the maroon and gold to a sweep of the Dolphins by the scores of 5-3 and 3-0.
STAC improves to 20-15 overall and 8-2 in ECC play, while CSI falls to 13-15 and 1-7.
Marcano's record-setting 47th career swipe came in the first inning of the second game, when the junior second baseman stole second following a lead-off walk. Elyse picked up two additional stolen bases in Thursday's opener.
In game one, STAC rolled out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning on the strength of an RBI sacrifice fly by Eliana Raposo and Sofia Marella's run-scoring single. A Staten Island homer in the fifth cut the lead to 2-1, but Elyse Marcano's RBI double and Raposo's RBI ground out in the bottom of the frame increased the Spartans' advantage to 4-1. The visiting Dolphins pushed across a pair of runs in the sixth inning to rally back to within one at 4-3. However, Trinadey Santiago would crush a solo shot just inside of the left field foul poll in the next half inning to make it a 5-3 game.
Sarah Clancy (W, 11-8) went the distance for St. Thomas Aquinas to pick up her third straight victory. The lefty pitcher allowed three runs on six hits with a walk and six strikeouts.
The nightcap featured the sides playing through the rain drops, with Madison Puppolo hurling a complete game, six-hit shutout. A three-run first inning capped by an Eliana Raposo 2 RBI single and a Trinadey Santiago run-scoring single would be all of the offense the Spartans would need.
Puppolo (W, 9-5) kept her recent streak of strong performances going, as the right-hander would walk two and fan two in addition to her giving up six hits over seven innings.
Up next, STAC will see these same CSI Dolphins on Sunday, April 13 for another ECC twin bill which gets underway at 2:00 p.m. on Staten Island.
