Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. - It was indeed a very Happy Birthday for Head Coach Kristen Sullivan, as her St. Thomas Aquinas College Softball team dominated Mercy University at the plate, on the bases and in the circle in a ECC doubleheader sweep on Tuesday at Smith Field. The Spartans took 14-1 and 5-0 decisions over the Mavericks.
STAC improves to 23-16 overall and 11-3 in ECC action, while Mercy drops to 13-17 and 3-5.
In addition to the birthday celebration for Sullivan, second baseman Elyse Marcano took over yet another softball program record, becoming the single-season stolen base leader with her swipe of second base in the sixth inning of the second game to give her 20 steals on the year.
Tuesday's opener featured the Spartans racing out to a 6-0 advantage after only two innings of play via a Trinadey Santiago RBI sac-fly, an Elyse Marcano two-run triple, an Adriana Coira RBI ground out and a pair of solo homers by Eliana Raposo and Sofia Marella. STAC blew the game wide open in the fourth with another five-spot, courtesy of a Raposo RBI base knock and a Mercy fielding error, a Marella RBI sacrifice fly, a run-scoring double by pinch hitter Giana Longo and Jessica Feerick's RBI double to make it 11-0.
Mercy finally got on the board with a run in the bottom of the frame, but the visitors continued to add to the Mavericks' misery with three additional runs in the top of the fifth with Sophia Marella's second home run of the day, this one a two-run shot, and Jessica Feerick's RBI single to close out the scoring at 14-1.
Sarah Clancy (W, 12-9) took the ball for the Spartans in game one and was terrific in the circle, allowing one run on six hits with a walk and five strikouts over five innings pitched to earn her 12th win of the year.
Game two was more of the same for St. Thomas Aquinas, as Madison Puppolo blanked the Mavericks offense while the maroon and gold kept hitting and scoring. A run in the fourth inning from pinch hitter Giana Longo's infield pop up, combined with another Mercy miscue made it 1-0. Trinadey Santiago's RBI single and Olivia Leon's run-scoring double in the fifth pushed the visitors lead to 3-0. Jessica Feerick added a two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning to make it a 5-0 advantage for STAC, which was the final outcome.
Puppolo (W, 11-5) was once again stellar toeing the rubber for the Spartans. Throwing a complete game, the senior righty surrendered just three hits and walk, while fanning five.
STAC next hosts D'Youville University in an ECC twin bill on Friday, April 18 at Spartan Field. First pitch of game one is set for 2:00 p.m.
