When the final chapter of Amanda Castro’s terrific collegiate softball career at St. Thomas Aquinas College is written, few players have enjoyed more success on the field and at the plate in the program’s 42-year history.
The senior from Long Beach, Calif., has been a centerpiece on three of the best teams in STAC history. She was a key starter on the 25-win club in 2018-19 that set the program record for most wins and was the team’s leading hitter on last year’s 24-12 team that reached the East Coast Conference championship round for the first time ever. This year’s team is currently 17-14 and in first place in the ECC.
Castro has been the common denominator as the program has soared to new heights of success.
“Amanda has helped change the trajectory of our program.” said Kristen Sullivan, STAC’s head coach. “I’ve watched her develop into one of the best hitters in the conference and also evolve into a well-rounded, wonderful young woman.”
Sullivan selected Castro as one of the team captains because of her work ethic, positive attitude and team spirit.
“Amanda adds so much to our team,” said Sullivan. “She’s been one of most consistent hitters since her freshman season and has a knack for delivering clutch hits to drive in important runs. She’s also filled the role as team captain this year in a very exemplary way.”
Castro’s 2021 season was memorable. Her batting average of .383 ranks as the fifth best in program history and was named second-team All-ECC for her excellent play. She also played steady defense at first base and has held down that role again this season.
She entered the 100-hit club with a single to center field in the third inning against Molloy College in the second game of an ECC doubleheader. In trademark fashion, she finished with three hits to help STAC post an important conference victory. She is the 30th player to reach the three-digit plateau.
Castro is logging a superb season this spring. She’s hitting .337 with an impressive on-base percentage of .396. She is second on the team in hits and runs batted in. In ECC play, she’s hitting .500 with an on-base percentage of .524. Overall, she is hitting .450 in the team’s last 16 games.
