Five Spartans Earn ECC Softball All-Conference Honors

Sparkill, N.Y. - St. Thomas Aquinas College’s Carissa Della Vecchia and Abbie Landrum were named first-team, while three teammates; Amanda Castro, Emilie Olivier and Amanda Castro earned second-team honors on the East Coast Conference All-Conference teams announced on Friday.

Della Vecchia won first-team recognition as a pitcher for the second season in a row while Landrum, a freshman, was named first-team at the Utility-Pitcher position. Senior Amanda Castro (designated player), Emilie Olivier (third base) and freshman Amanda Demmerle (outfield) placed on the second team. STAC won the ECC regular season championship and has set a new school record for single-season wins with a record of 28-19.

“I am very pleased that five of our players are being recognized with all-conference honors for their strong play this season,” said Kristen Sullivan, STAC’s Head Coach. “Carissa and Abbie led the way for us all year with their pitching and hitting. Amanda Castro, Emilie Olivier and Amanda Demmerle played at a very consistent level.”

D’Youville University’s Maddy Pepke was named the Player of the Year while the University of Bridgeport’s Katie Burawski (Pitcher of the Year) and Madison D’Amato (Rookie of the Year) won the other major individual player awards.

Della Vecchia has turned in another terrific season on the mound. The lefthander threw a no-hitter over the College of Staten Island and became the first pitcher in STAC history to strike out 200 batters in one season. In the regular season, she posted a 15-6 record with five shutouts.

Landrum has enjoyed tremendous success in her first year on the collegiate level.  On the mound, she finished 12-13 with an earned run average of 2.71 and tossed a no-hitter against Dominican College. She was among the team leaders in hits, doubles, RBI and batting average.

Castro reached the prestigious 100-hit mark this year to culminate an exceptional four-year career. She excelled in conference play this season with her bat. Olivier emerged as the team’s starting third base man and leadoff hitter this season. She led the team in doubles and homers while hitting for a high average. Demmerle, a lefty slapper, added speed, steady hitting and good defense in center field.
