The St. Thomas Aquinas softball team played ten games over the span of five days at the NTC Softball Complex while in Clermont, FL. The Spartans went 1-9, picking up a 4-0 win against St. Michael's in their final game. The Spartans scored all four runs in the 1st inning starting with an RBI single from Danielle DiModugno to score Briana Keaveney. Alyssa Chelak also had an RBI sibgle to scored Ashley Landolina who had a single in her at bat. Amanda Schweitzer scored in the same play off a field error. Kelcy McGeehan reached on a fielder's choice bringing home DiMudugno and scoring the Spartans final run. Keaveney earned her second win on the mound for the season; yielding 5 hits, 0 runs and 2 strike outs.
The Spartans struggled to score in their first two games notching just one run in each. Against Wayne State Ashley Landolina had an RBI triple to score Briana Keaveney. In the second game of the day, Keaveney scored the Spartans lone run again, this time off a sac fly from Amanda Leone.
The Spartan bats got going on day two when Danielle DiModugno hit a 2RBI single scoring Brittany Malloy and Amanda Schweitzer to tie the game at 2-2. St. Cloud State was able to regain a 6-2 lead and DiModugno's run in the 4th inning brought the Spartans within three. In the next game, Ashley Landolina had a solo home run but the Spartans fell, 3-1 to Indianapolis.
STAC took an early 3-1 lead over Purdue Northwest off a 1st inning 2 RBI single from Brittany Malloy. Kelcy McGeehan scored an unearned run in the top of the second off a fielding error. However, the Spartans gave up eight runs over the final three innings to fall, 9-3.
On Tuesday, the Spartans fell 5-2 to West Chester with Ashley Landolina scoring off a fielder's choice from Amanda Leone's bunt. Me'-Lani Kendle scored off an error giving Taylor Sullivan an RBI. Landolina's solo home run in the 1st inning gave STAC a 1-0 lead over Bemidji State but they were not able to hold on giving up two runs to fall 2-1.
The final day, saw an action packed game with the Spartans falling in extra innings, 13-12 to Southern Connecticut State. Once again the Spartans scored early putting three runs on the scoreboard in the 1st inning highlighted by Amanda Schweitzer's RBI double. The Spartans were down 7-3 throught the top of the 5th before rallying back; starting with 2-run in the top of the 5th. STAC was able to regain the lead in the bottom of the 6th, highlighted by a 2 RBI single from Amanda Leone and topped off with Brittany Malloy stealing home to give STAC a 10-8 lead.
The Owls used a 4 run 7th inning to regain the lead for good. Briana Keaveney added an RBI single to bring home Caitlyn Francoeur and score the Spartans final run.
STAC went 1-1 in their home opener against Franklin Pierce and will return to their home field on Wednesday March 21st for a double header against St. Rose. Wednesday's first game will begin at 2:30 p.m.
