The St. Thomas Aquinas softball team opened the 2011 season in Clermont, FL last week. The Lady Spartans went 4-4 for the week. Junior Heather Clausen led STAC with 10 hits, including 3 doules and 4 RBI. Maura Power went 3-2 on the mound and Rosie Coyne earned 3 saves.
The Lady Spartans picked up their first win of the season, beating Franklin Pierce, 7-4. Down 2-0, Clausen hit a 2 RBI double to tie the game for STAC. The Lady Spartans fell behind 4-2 in the 5th inning, only to answer the call in the next inning. Clausen led off with a single and scored on a sac fly by Power. Devin Meikle hit an RBI double to tie the game again. The Lady Spartans added three runs in the bottom of the 6th with one unearned run and a 2 RBI double by ToniAnn Gorth. Power picked up the win on the mound and Coyne had the save.
STAC followed with a 2-1 win over Nyack the next day. Tied 1-1 , Clausen hit a RBI single in the bottom of the 7th to win the game. Power picked up her second win of the season. The Lady Spartans used late game magic in the second game of the day as they broke open a 3-3 tie with a 2-run 7th over Franklin Pierce. Clausen and Ferriello each had RBI singles to score Sharis Ruiz and Michelle Sasso. Megan Sweezy picked up her first Lady Spartan win and Rosie Coyne earned her 2nd save.
STAC picked up their 4th win, using a 4-run 4th inning to top St. Michael's 4-3. Power picked up her 3rd win and Coyne her 3rd save.
The Lady Spartans will play C.W. Post on Saturday to open their conference play.
