Tough Day on the Court as Men’s Volleyball Drops 3-0 Match to Merrimack

Sparkill, N.Y. - The volleyball gods giveth but they also taketh away. Less than 24 hours after blanking Sacred Heart University, the St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Volleyball team was dealt a straight-sets sweep by Merrimack College on Saturday afternoon at the Spartan Athletic Complex. 

STAC drops to 5-10 on the year, while Merrimack moves to 5-9.

How it Happened

  • As a team, St. Thomas Aquinas recorded 47 kills compared to Merrimack College's 44. The Spartans also had 3.5 blocks and 45 assists, while the Warriors tallied 4 blocks and 40 assists.
  • Merrimack outhit STAC by a .437 to .313 margin for the match.
  • Kyran Versteegen paced the Spartans offense with a team-high 19 kills. Versteegen also registered two serve assists, a dig and a block assist.
  • Marcus Franck tallied a match-high 34 serve assists (11.33 assists/set). He also accumulated a kill and eight digs for the maroon and gold.
  • Santiago Valenca picked up 14 kills a serve assist, three digs and block assist on Saturday.
  • Luis Grath racked up six kills, a service ace, two digs, a solo block and a block assist against the Warriors.
  • Jakob Schwarz contributed three kills, four digs and a block assist.
  • David Weiss accumulated two kills, two serve assists, a service ace, two digs and a block assist in the match.
  • Ivaylo Todorov put together a three serve assist and seven dig effort for the maroon and gold.
