STAC Drops 3-2 Thriller to Dominican, Snaps Two-Year ECC Men's Volleyball Win Streak

Sparkill, N.Y. - For the first time since February 23, 2024, the St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Volleyball team came out on the wrong side of an East Coast Conference matchup, falling to Dominican University in a five-set thriller, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon at the Spartan Athletic Complex.

STAC falls to 9-12 overall and 3-1 in ECC play, while Dominican moves to 6-16 and 2-2.

The Spartans and Chargers went the distance, as the sides picked up two set victories apiece, with the maroon and gold taking sets one and four and the visitors from Blauvelt rebounding with victories in sets two and three. A match-deciding fifth set ensued between teams, but Dominican cruised to lopsided victory to ultimately take the contest.

How it Happened

  • As a team, St. Thomas Aquinas recorded 57 kills compared to Dominican's 45. The Spartans also had 12.5 blocks and 56 assists, while the Chargers tallied 15 blocks and 43 assists.
  • STAC outhit Dominican by a .212 to .169 margin for the match.
  • Kyran Versteegen paced the Spartans offense with a match-high 19 kills. He also registered a serve assist, a service ace, eight digs and five block assists.
  • Marcus Franck tallied a match-high 42 serve assists (8.4 assists/set). Franck also accumulated three kills, three digs, a solo block and five block assists for the maroon and gold.
  • Jakob Schwarz picked up 17 kills, two serve assists, a service ace, nine digs and a block assist on Sunday afternoon.
  • David Weiss racked up seven kills, two service aces and six block assists against the Chargers.
  • Luis Grath contributed six kills, a serve assist, a service ace, four digs and five block assists to the match.
  • Santiago Valenca accumulated three kills, a serve assist, a service ace and two digs.
  • Alan Santiago put together a two kill, six dig and one block assist effort for the Spartans.
  • Ivaylo Todorov recorded two serve assists and eight digs over five sets.
  • The Spartans went an impressive 17-0 in conference regular season and postseason matches from their last loss on 2/23/24 until today.
