Orlando, Fla. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Tennis team dropped its first match of the season on Wednesday by falling to No. 4 ITA nationally ranked Wayne State University, 5-2, at the USTA Lake Nona Campus.
STAC slips to 6-1 on the year, while WSU improves to 8-1.
Doubles
Wayne State took the early momentum by sweeping the doubles matches. The first result came at No. 3 doubles, where Tom Wasner and Sam Knowles defeated Erik Victor Tauson and Ondrej Sramek 6-2. The Warriors followed with another win at No. 1 doubles, as No. 11 ranked Harry Forsyth and Luis Klaus topped Henry Ronnberg and Theo Renoux 6-4. The final doubles match to finish came at No. 2, where George Day and Thomas Mathys edged Don Vinz Lominoque and Nagamitsu Kuroda 7-6 (7-4) in a tiebreak to complete the sweep and give Wayne State the doubles point.
Singles
Singles play began with Wayne State extending its lead at the top of the lineup. At No. 1 singles, George Day earned a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Theo Renoux in the first singles match to finish. One of the most dramatic matches of the day followed at No. 5 singles, where Ondrej Sramek outlasted Harry Forsyth in a marathon battle, 0-6, 6-1, 1-0 (12), in a deciding match tiebreak to make it 2-1. The Spartans tied things up shortly after at No. 6 singles, as Erik Victor Tauson delivered a strong performance with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Warren Gunnar. Wayne State added another point at No. 4 singles, where Benjamin Hill defeated Henry Ronnberg 6-3, 6-4. The final two matches both went to match tiebreaks. At No. 3 singles, Thomas Mathys rallied to defeat Don Vinz Lominoque 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (4), and No. 53 ranked Luis Klaus closed out the match at No. 2 singles with a 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (5) victory over Lorenzo Meschini.
