Orlando, Fla. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Tennis team opened its annual Sunshine State spring break tour on Monday, by beating Edinboro University, 4-3, at the USTA Lake Nona Campus.
STAC remains perfect on the season, improving to 6-0, while Edinboro falls to 1-5.
Doubles
STAC struck first at No. 2 doubles as Don Vinz Lominoque and Nagamitsu Kuroda delivered a quick 6-2 win over Arsen Tabaldyev and Gerardo Garrido Guzman. Shortly after, the Spartans secured the doubles point at No. 1 when Theo Renoux and Henry Ronnberg battled past Leon Grassnickel and Emiel Tidman, 7-5, in a tightly played set. Einboro prevented the doubles sweep at No. 3. In the final match to finish, Fabricio Sosa Pons and Duarte Correia edged Ondrej Sramek and Erik Victor Tauson in a tiebreak set, 7-6 (7-4)
Singles
Singles play began with a strong performance from STAC at No. 3, where Henry Ronnberg defeated Duarte Correia in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. The Spartans went up 3-0 at No. 5 after Emiel Tidman retired from his match against Erik Victor Tauson with the score 2-6, 6-0, 3-0. At the top of the lineup, Leon Grassnickel earned a key three-set victory for Edinboro, defeating Lorenzo Meschini 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 at No. 1 singles. Another tight battle followed at No. 4 singles, where Arsen Tabaldyev outlasted Ondrej Sramek 7-5, 2-6, 7-5. Edinboro continued its push at No. 2 singles as Fabricio Sosa rallied past Theo Renoux in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6–3 to even the score at 3-3. The final match of the day came at No. 6 singles, where Alberto Espinosa Navarro closed out a hard-fought three-set win for STAC over Gerardo Garrido Guzman, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 to give the maroon and gold the victory.
