Flushing, N.Y. - St. Thomas Aquinas College made its way out to the QC Tennis Bubble on Saturday evening to do battle with the Regular Season Champions Queens College in the finals of the East Coast Conference Men's Tennis Championship. Despite putting forth a valiant effort against the Knights, STAC came up short in its quest for a second ECC title in the last five seasons, falling to Queens 4-1.
STAC moves to 17-5 on the season and now awaits the seedings in the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Championship, which gets underway with regional play on May 11-12 at selected campus sites. Meanwhile, Queens improves to 21-2, winning its fourth straight championship and eighth crown in the last ten seasons (2020 Season cancelled due to COVID-19 Pandemic). The Knights receive an automatic bid for the NCAA Division II Championship.
DOUBLES
St. Thomas Aquinas opened championship action with a strong performance in doubles play, by taking two-of-three matchups to claim the first team point. The duo of Don Vinz Lominoque & Nagamitsu Kuroda won their match over Said Akbarov & Adam Laur at No. 3, 6-4 and Theo Renoux & Henry Ronnberg beat Lucas Foix Sotos & Alexis Gibiard, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 1.
SINGLES
Once the sides moved to singles action, Queens rallied for four straight wins to claim yet another conference crown. Lucas Foix Sotos started the victory spree in the No. 1 slot, taking his matchup over Lorenzo Meschini 6-3, 6-4. Samuel Linck followed the trend, taking a 6-4, 6-0 triumph over Ondrej Sramek in the No. 5 slot to give the Knights a 2-1. Adam Laur put the maroon and gold on the ropes in the No. 2 position, taking a 6-3, 6-4 decision against Theo Renoux, while Tim Andersson delivered the knockout blow with a 7-5, 6-4 decision over Don Vinz Lominoque to end the postseason contest.
