STAC Men’s Tennis Drops Tight 4-3 Match to Queens, Win Streak Ends at Nine

Flushing, N.Y. - On Friday, St. Thomas Aquinas College and Queens College went head-to-head in a battle for the East Coast Conference Regular Season title and the overall number one seed in the upcoming Men's Tennis postseason tournament at the QC Tennis Bubble. In a test of wills throughout, the host Knights took a narrow 4-3 decision over the Spartans to snap their nine-match winning streak.

STAC slips to 15-4 overall and 5-1 in ECC play, while Queens improves to 20-2 and 5-1. As a result of their conference records, both teams will share this year's regular season crown. However, by virtue of several league tie-breakers, the Knights will be slotted as the top seed, with the Spartans seeded second.

Doubles

Queens College claimed the early edge by taking two of three doubles competitions to secure the first team point. No. 3 Tim Andersson & Samuel Linck set the tone for the Knights with a 6-3 win over Ondrej Sramek & Erik Victor Tauson. STAC tied things with a victory at No. 1 as Theo Renoux & Henry Ronnberg bested Lucas Foix Sotos & Alexis Martin-Gibiard 7-5. However, the clinching triumph came for the hosts at No. 2, where Adam Laur & Said Akbarov outlasted Nagamitsu Kuroda & Don Vinz Lominoque in a tight 7-6, (7-5) contest.

Singles

In singles play, Queens College struck for three straight victories to take the match. At No. 6, Ismoil Khayriddinov opened with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Erik Victor Tauson, followed by Tim Andersson doubling the advantage with a 6-3, 6-2 vctory against Don Vinz Lominoque at No. 3 to put the Spartans on the ropes. Samuel Linck put things out of reach at No. 5, defeating Ondrej Sremek 6-3, 6-3.

Although too late, St. Thomas Aquinas responded at No. 4, where Henry Ronnberg earned a 6-3, 6-3 decision over Alexis Martin-Gibiard to get STAC on the board. The Spartans continued their push with back-to-back three-set thrillers, as No. 2 Theo Renoux outlasted Said Akbarov 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (8), and No. 1 Lorenzo Meschini closed out the day's events with a hard-fought 6-7 (6), 6-4, 1-0 (9) win over Lucas Foix Sotos.
