St. Thomas Aquinas earned its first-ever trip to the field of 48 on the strength of Saturday's 4-3 come-from-behind ECC Tournament Championship victory over Queens College. Six bids were awarded in the region with #1 Le Moyne, #2 Southern New Hampshire, #3 Queens, #4 Jefferson, #5 STAC and #6 Chestnut Hill all qualifying for the big dance.
The Spartans (17-7, 4-2 ECC) and Rams (14-4, 7-1 CACC) faced off against each other back in the fall season on September 29, with STAC taking the 4-3 decision. In the contest, St. Thomas Aquinas took two out of three match-ups in doubles play, with the teams of Ivan Laiz & Valentin Baranyi and Maximilian Kendler & Slobodan Cejovic taking victories. In singles action, Ludovico Truffelli, Laiz and Baranyi were all successful in their individual battles to help the maroon and gold secure the triumph.
Preliminary Round matches will begin on May 9-10 at top-seeds Le Moyne (Syracuse, N.Y.) and Southern New Hampshire (Manchester, N.H.). The winner of #4 Jefferson vs. #5 St. Thomas Aquinas will play #1 Le Moyne with the winner of #3 Queens vs. #6 Chestnut Hill taking on #2. Southern New Hampshire.
The winners of each regional bracket will advance to the 2022 NCAA Men's Tennis Championship, which will take place May 18-22 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
