St. Thomas Aquinas Men's Basketball player Grant Singleton was named the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association Division II Player of the Week on Tuesday, following the Spartans 2-0 ECC Tournament weekend, which saw them capture their fifth East Coast Conference Championship in last six seasons.
Singleton, who was also named the ECC's Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament, averaged 18.5 points in victories over Molloy and Daemen (83-67) last week. He shot 60.0% (15-of-25) from the field and 80% (4-of-5) from the free throw line, while adding 4.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists.
In defeating Molloy College 110-75 in the Semifinal, the junior guard from Sumter, S.C., posted 17 points, grabbed one rebound and four assists, while connecting on 58.3% (7-of-12) of his shots from the field.
Then, in a 83-67 decision over Daemen College in the Final, Grant scored 20 points, grabbed 7 rebounds and four assists. He went 8-of-13 (61.5%) from the field.
STAC (13-1) secured the #1 seed in the upcoming NCAA Division II East Region Tournament, which will begin on Saturday, March 13 in Albany, NY. By virtue of being ranked as a the top seed, the Spartans (along with #2 seed Daemen) will have a bye in the quarterfinal and will automatically advance to the semifinal round, which takes place on Sunday, March 14. St. Thomas Aquinas face the winner of #4 Dominican College vs. #5 Caldwell University at 6pm on Sunday evening.
