The St. Thomas Aquinas golf team has once again had an exceptional year with a record breaking 292 team scoring average and five 1st place victories between the Fall and the Spring. The Spartans finished the regular season ranked 15th in the country and 1st in the East Region.
The Spartans have been guided by the leadership of their two seniors; Kevin Gately and Brendan Hunter who have been an intrical part to the Spartans success over the past four seasons. Both seniors have been a part of the program that has advanced to the NCAA Championship in their freshmen and junior seasons. The Spartans, along with Gately and Hunter are in search of their third trip in four years this coming Spring.
Kevin Gately has played in 100 colegiate rounds, maintaining a scoring average of 74.8. Gately has posted 21 rounds of par or better; shooting in the 60's on 8 occassions. The senior carded his first 1st place win this past Fall. Over the past two seasons he has made 160 birdies, putting him in 2nd place in the programs history. Gately currently holds a 73 scoring average.
Fellow class mate, Brendan Hunter is finishing his career having played 90 collegiate rounds, maintaining a 74.5 scoring average. He has posted 30 rounds of par or better; shooting in the 60's on nine different occassions. The senior has earned five 1st place finishes during his career as a Spartan. He has made over 140 birdies which ranks 4th in school history and has a current scoring average of 73.63.
The Spartans will compete in the NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Regional Championship Cobb Course at The Glade Springs Resort in Daniels, WV on May 8th trying to earn another opportunity to advance to the NCAA DII Championship at Reunion Resort Golf Course in Kissimmee, FL.
