The men's golf team earned their 3rd win of the spring and 5th win of the season with a wire to wire victory at the Tim Brown Invitational hosted by Skidmore College.
During the first round, the team shot a team score of 290 behind some consistent play of the entire team. Michael Miranda and Hamish Houston led the team with rounds of 72 while Kevin Gately and Brendan Hunter posted rounds of 73. Rounding out the team scoring was Michael Frizalone who carded a round of 74. The Spartans found themselves 3 shots ahead of the host 16th ranked Skidmore College.
During the second round the Spartans separated themselves from the field. Junior Michael Miranda led the charge with a final round 67. After making bogey on the 6th and 7th holes, Miranda made 5 birdies in his next 6 holes. His 2-day score of 139 (71-67) was good for his 3rd victory of the spring. It lowered his season scoring average to 71.85 which ranks 18th in the country for scoring and sets a new school record.
Seniors Kevin Gately and Brendan Hunter carded identical rounds of 71 on day 2 and finished the event with 2-day scores of 144 (73-71) which was good for 2nd place behind Miranda. Hamish Houston put together a round of 75 to shoot 147 (72-75) for the event, earning him his first top 5 finish at STAC.
Michael Frizalone rounded out the scoring with a final round 77 and a 2-day score of 151 (74-77) which was good for a 12th place finish. The team's score of 282 was 13 shots better than Skidmore and good for a 16 shot victory.
The Spartans finish the regular season ranked #1 in the East Region according to Golfstat and the NCAA rankings. Their team scoring average of 292 puts them ranked 18th in the country for scoring and sets a new record. They finish the year with 5 tournament victories, 3 runner-up finishes and 5 individual medalist honors.
The team will be back in action two weeks from now at the East/Atlantic Super Regional in Daniels, West Virginia at the Glade Springs Resort where they look to earn their 6th National Championship bid in the past 11 seasons.
