Pomona, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team closed out their 2025 campaign on Sunday with a 9-3 Senior Day victory over Queens College at Clover Stadium.
STAC wraps up the year with a 14-29 overall record and a 7-13 ECC mark, while Queens falls to 18-26 and 9-11, but will move on to postseason play later next week.
Prior to the Spartans regular season home finale, the maroon and gold honored its graduating class, as Andrew Alameda, Ryan Appell, Aidan Cardenas, John Dezago, Chris Ewing, David Potenza, Joseph Scamardella, Robert Williams and Orin Winslow's collegiate careers were celebrated with on-field ceremonies, which included the athletes' families, teammates, coaches and college administrators.
Once the teams got down to business on the diamond it was all about someone getting a lead before the forecasted rains hit in the Lower Hudson Valley. It took a little longer than the Spartans had hoped for, but the maroon and gold took a commanding lead by scoring six runs in the middle innings. A Ryan Appell RBI single and Kyle DeCresce's two-run blast to the left field bleachers made it 3-0 in the fourth, followed by an RBI sac-fly by David Potenza, an RBI single from Chris Ewing in the fifth to make it 5-0. Michael Zeis grabbed an RBI of his own in sixth via a bases-loaded hit by pitch, which scored DeCresce to increase the hosts' lead to 6-0.
Queens struck for three runs in the seventh inning to cut their deficit in half at 6-3, before Kyle DeCresce's RBI single and Ryan Hillery's two-run base knock in the bottom of the frame extended the Spartans' advantage to 9-3. When the heavy rains finally came in the ninth inning, the umpires decided to err on the side of caution and end the game to protect player health and safety.
In the final start of this collegiate career, Andrew Alameda (W, 2-5) was superb on the mound. The senior right-hander hurled five shutout innings, allowing just one hit and three walks while striking out six to pick up the win. Aidan Cardenas and John Dezago came on in relief for the final three innings of the rain-shortened contest and combined to allow three runs (one earned) on two hits with a walk and two Ks.
