STAC Sweeps Weekend Series from Dominican

Pomona, N.Y. - Playing one day later than expected due to rain, snow and cold temperatures in the Lower Hudson Valley, the St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team completed a clean sweep of weekend contests against crosstown rivals Dominican University with a 5-2 victory on Sunday afternoon at Clover Stadium.

STAC improves to 9-23 overall with its second straight triumph, while Dominican falls to 26-13 with its second straight defeat.

The Spartans opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning with a 2 RBI double by Joseph Scamardella and a David Potenza RBI sacrifice fly to make it 3-0.

Dominican got on the scoreboard in the fourth to make it a 3-1 game, but St. Thomas Aquinas answered with a run in the fifth inning via a Ryan Hillery bunt single, combined with a Chargers error to put the maroon and gold back ahead by three at 4-1. Nick Oelcher added a run-scoring single in the eighth to increase the lead to 5-1.

In the ninth, the visitors cut their deficit to three on a two-out, bases loaded wild pitch, but that would be all of the damage done in the frame with the Spartans closing things out for the 5-2 victory.

Orin Winslow (W, 1-5) got the Sunday start for STAC and allowed a run on six hits with a strikeout over five and a third innings pitched to pick up his first win of the year. Tom O'Neill, Jeremiah Vega and Kyle Rogers all saw action out of the bullpen and combined to give up a run on four hits with two walks and two Ks in three and two-thirds innings of relief work.

STAC next hosts Kutztown University on Wednesday, April 16 at Clover Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
