Pomona, N.Y. - Opening a critical four-game East Coast Conference series on Friday, the St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team saw its modest two-game winning streak disappear before their eyes with a 13-7 loss to the College of Staten Island at Clover Stadium.
STAC drops to 9-24 overall and 4-9 in ECC action, while CSI moves to 13-23 and 7-6.
Staten Island took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but it was quickly answered by the Spartans in the bottom of the frame via Ryan Appell and Nick Oelcher RBI singles to make it 2-1 in favor of the maroon and gold.
The visitors retook the lead with a run in the third, a run in the fourth and five runs in the sixth inning to go up 8-2. Ryan Appell cut the STAC deficit to 8-3 in the sixth when he scored on a double play ball, but four more Dolphins runs in the seventh would extend the lead to 12-3. St. Thomas Aquinas battled throughout the conference contest and added to their run total in the bottom of the seventh on another Ryan Appell run-scoring single, a Michael Zeis RBI double and a bases loaded wild pitch which scored Appell to make it a 12-6 game. The sides traded runs in the eighth, as an RBI ground out by Ryan Hillary would close the scoring at 13-7.
Andrew Schoelles (L, 1-2) got the start for STAC and lasted just four innings. Schoelles surrendered three runs on four hits with six walks and a K to pick up the loss. Relievers John Dezago, Jeremiah Vega, Eliahs Delgado and Anthony Holtje combined to allow 12 hits and 10 runs (eight earned) over the final five innings. The quartet walked five Dolphins and struck out another four.
STAC continues the series with Staten Island on Saturday (April 19), when the teams make their way to the CSI Baseball Complex for a doubleheader which gets underway at 12:00 p.m.
