Flushing, N.Y. - The hopes of a 2025 postseason run by the St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team were dashed on Friday afternoon, as Queens College swept an East Coast Conference doubleheader from the maroon and gold at Hennekens Stadium by the scores of 8-3 and 5-0.
STAC falls to 13-29 overall and 6-13 in ECC play, while Queens moves to 18-25 and 9-10.
In game one, the Spartans posted runs in the second and third innings as Ryan Appell clubbed a solo shot to make it 1-0, before a Chris Ewing RBI single doubled the lead at 2-0. Queens tied things at 2-2 by scoring twice in the fourth, but Joseph Scamardella's run-scoring double in the fifth inning put STAC back ahead by one at 3-2. The Knights evened the score at 3-3 in the sixth, and went ahead for good with five additional runs in the seventh and eighth to take the contest 8-3.
Andrew Schoelles got the start in the opener and was charged with a no-decision. Schoelles allowed two runs on three hits with three walks and two Ks in four innings of work. Andrew Alameda, Tom O'Neill and Jeremiah Vega all saw action out of the bullpen, with the trio combining to hurl four innings in relief while surrendering nine hits and six runs with a walk and three strikeouts. Alameda (1-5) was tagged with the loss as a result of giving up two runs on five hits and two strikeouts over two and a third innings on the mound.
The night cap featured Queens busting out to a 4-0 advantage through the first two innings, before picking up an additional run in the sixth to make it 5-0 in the seven-inning affair. STAC could not manufacture any offense in the second game, only recording three hits while also drawing a walk in the blanking by the Knights pitching staff.
Aidan Cardenas took to the mound for the maroon and gold and lasted just an inning and two-thirds, allowing four runs on three hits with four walks. Cardenas was charged with the loss and falls to 3-1 on the year. Kyle Rodgers came on in relief for the final four and a third innings and gave up five hits and a run while fanning one Knights hitter.
