Uniondale, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team suffered a four-game conference series sweep at the hands of Molloy University with a pair of losses on Sunday at the Mitchel Field Athletic Complex on Long Island. Molloy took Saturday's suspended seven-inning affair, 6-4, before wrapping up the season series with an 8-3 victory in the regularly scheduled nine-inning matchup.
STAC falls to 7-23 overall and 4-8 within ECC play, while Molloy improves to 19-11 and 9-3.
Resuming play in the top of the seventh inning, with a runner on first and no one out in a 4-4 game, Molloy was able to scratch across a pair of runs on a Spartans fielding error to take a 6-4 lead. STAC went down one-two-three in the bottom of the frame to close out the contest. Jeremiah Vega (L, 0-1) was settled with the loss for allowing an unearned run on two hits in an inning's worth of work.
When the sides returned to the field for the scheduled Sunday affair, the host Lions posted runs in the first and fifth innings to take a 6-0 lead. St. Thomas Aquinas cut their deficit in half at 6-3 via a three-run homer by David Potenza in the top of the seventh, but Molloy would add a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame to increase their lead to 8-3, which would be the final outcome.
Tom O'Neill (L, 2-4) got the start in the series finale and worked four innings, allowing five runs on six hits, with three strikeouts. O'Neill was charged with the loss. Relievers John Dezago and Aidan Cardenas were each summoned from the bullpen for the final four innings and combined to give up four hits and three runs, while striking out three Lions hitters.
STAC next visits Dominican University on Friday, April 11 at Clover Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
