Spartans Score 35 Runs in Doubleheader Sweep of Georgian Court

Jackson, N.J. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team scored 35 total runs in a doubleheader sweep of Georgian Court University on Sunday afternoon at the Jackson Justice Complex in South Jersey.

STAC took both contests by the scores of 18-11 and 17-6 to run their record to 12-27 on the season. Meanwhile, GCU falls to 8-38 on the year.

The Spartans raced out to a 6-0 lead over the first two innings, as a Nick Oelcher RBI fielder's choice, a Lions fielding error allowing both Kyle DeCresce and Oelcher to score and Ryan Appell's three-run homer put the visitors up by a half dozen runs. Georgian Court answered with three runs in the bottom of the second inning to cut the deficit in half at 6-3.

However, the maroon and gold answered with nine straight runs over the third, fourth and fifth innings, highlighted by Anthony DiMarco's third inning three-run double and Nick Oelcher's two-run shot to right field in the fifth to make it 15-3 STAC. The host Lions then hit four home runs in the bottom of the fifth, along with an RBI double in the sixth to narrow the score once again to 15-10. Ryan Appell's RBI single and a Oelcher run-scoring sacrifice fly pushed the Spartans lead to 17-10. The sides traded runs in the eighth and ninth innings, with Georgian Court picking up their fifth home run of the day to make it 17-11, before a David Potenza RBI sac-fly put the visitors back up by seven at 18-11.

Andrew Schoelles got the start in the opener for STAC and allowed three runs on five hits with three walks and four strikeouts over three innings of work. Schoelles received a no-decision. Anthony Holtje, Ricardo Gonzalez, Andrew Alameda and James Kahn all saw action out of the Spartans bullpen, with the quartet combining to surrender eight runs on nine hits with five walks and six Ks. Holtje (W, 1-0) took the victory despite giving up six runs on six hits while fanning three in two innings on the mound.

In the second game, Georgian Court took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, before the Spartans tied things up in the second when Kyle DeCresce scored on a muffed throw by the Lions first baseman. A five-run fifth inning put STAC in the lead 6-1, as Charlie Cordisco scored on a wild pitch, followed by Anthony Dimarco's a two-run single, a Tyler Haydt RBI base knock and Nick Oelcher's advancement to the plate on a caught stealing at second base. The host Lions answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame to make it a manageable 6-5 contest. An 11-run sixth inning, highlighted by a Kyle DeCresce homer and a two-run bomb by Joseph Scamardella, along with RBI doubles from Tyler Haydt, Ryan Appell and Chris Ewing made it 17-5. One final home run, courtesy of the Lions put the final score at 17-6.

Aidan Cardenas (W, 3-0) took the ball for the night cap and gave up five runs on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts over four and a third innings pitched. The duo of Jeremiah Vega and Kyle Rodgers combined to hurl two and two-thirds innings, allowing three hits and a run with two walks and two strikeouts.
