Sparkill, N.Y. - Returning home from their four-match Florida Spring Break tour, the St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Tennis team took a 5-2 East Coast Conference decision from Daemen University at the Riley Family Tennis Courts on Saturday afternoon.
STAC moves to 5-6 overall and 2-3 in ECC play, while Daemen falls to 3-12 and 0-6.
Doubles
STAC opened the match by securing the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. The top doubles pair of Kateryna Kryuchkova and Sun Zhuoxuan earned a strong 6-0 victory over Bella Bjerkan and Marley Conover. Shortly after, Shreethika Vangala and Mar Caneves Bufi clinched the point with a 6-1 win against Carly Armitage and Ashley Bonilla at No. 2 doubles. Daemen recorded the No. 3 doubles match by default.
Singles
In singles play, STAC captured four straight-set victories to secure the match. Shreethika Vangala picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win over Ashley Bonilla at No. 4 singles. Mar Caneves Bufi followed with a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Carly Armitage at No. 2 singles. At the top spot, Kateryna Kryuchkova sealed the Spartans' fourth point with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Marley Conover at No. 1 singles. No. 3 Sun Zhuoxuan dispatched Bella Bjerkan 6-4, 6-3 to make it 5-0.
Daemen claimed wins at No. 6 and No. 5 singles, but it was not enough to overcome STAC's advantage.
