Santiago's Three-Run Blast Rallies STAC Softball to Doubleheader Sweep of D'Youville

Sparkill, N.Y. - Trinadey Santiago's three-run homer in game two of Friday's ECC twin bill with D'Youville University, erased an early deficit and propelled the St. Thomas Aquinas College Softball team to a 9-3 victory. The Spartans also took a 3-0 decision from the visiting Saints in the opener to earn a conference sweep at Spartan Field.

STAC improves to 25-16 overall and 13-3 in ECC action, while D'Youville falls to 18-12 and 8-8. For St. Thomas Aquinas, Friday's triumphs represent a fourth straight season of 25 wins or more.

In game one, Eliana Raposo's RBI double in the third inning gave the hosts a 1-0 lead. Sophia Marella's run-scoring single and Jessica Ferrick's RBI single in the fifth increased the Spartans' advantage to 3-0, which would be all of the run support that starting pitcher Sarah Clancy would need.

Clancy (13-9) tossed a five-hit, complete game shutout with four strikeouts to pick up her thirteenth win of the campaign.

The night cap saw the visiting Saints post three runs in the second inning to take an early lead. However, STAC answered back with a pair of runs on bases loaded walks, scoring both Jordyn Gautier and Adriana Coira in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to 3-2. In the fifth inning, a three-run blast over the left-center field fence by Trinadey Santiago flipped the scoreboard in favor of the maroon and gold at 5-3. Insurance runs via a D'Youville wild pitch, scoring Elyse Marcano and an RBI sac-fly by Santiago in the sixth, gave the hosts a 7-3 advantage. Then, Jessica Ferrick's two-run homer to left field closed the scoring at 9-3.

Madison Puppolo (W, 12-5) allowed three runs on nine hits with a walk and two Ks over seven innings of work to earn her twelfth victory of the year.

STAC next hosts Adelphi University on Wednesday, April 23 at Spartan Field. The non-conference doubleheader between East Region powers will get underway at 2:30 p.m.
